We’ll be hearing from Mayor of Oshawa, Dan Carter, on the issue of homelessness in our city.
Wondering how you can get involved in this real issue? Roy Graves, a member of our church, has started the First Light Foundation of Hope:
The First Light Foundation of Hope incorporated in 2018 as a faith-based not for profit outreach in Durham Region. We are located at 253 Simcoe Street South where we operate a before and after hours Drop in Center and Outreach program. The center operates from Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 7:00pm to 10:00pm Thursday through Saturday night. At our center we cater to the impoverished, the homeless, the addicted and those of lesser means within our community by supplying them with basic nutritional staples, clothing, foot care services, warmth during the coldest hours of the day throughout the winter months and a cool refreshing environment during hot summer days. Our centre offers access to counseling and a support network in a safe, loving environment where we can further provide some much needed Hope. We also operate a mobile unit from the hours of 8:00am to 9 30am which seeks out individuals in the alleyways and streets of Durham region and goes directly into environments known as “Tent Cities”. Our Outreach is unique in that our operation during the early hours of the morning and later hours of the evening occurs while there are few other resources in the community readily available during these hours. Our mobile service provides assistance to those that are hungry and have shelter requirements in the various wooded areas or parks in our community. We work in cooperation with other community outreach providers and centers providing referrals to other agencies and services where necessary.
