Why…

Is an interesting word that is increasing in popularity with our generation. In fact, it seems to be a word that characterizes us! See in the past, the word “why“ was easily combated with a countering “why not.“ Growing up,  it didn’t seem to matter how much I asked “why“,  I was never given the answer that was needed to clarify my question. I would ask things like, “Why do we go to Church?“  or “Why did God create us if he knew we were just going to stab him in the back?“ These were valid questions I thought. But no one would answer my why question. I simply got a countering “why not“ or “that’s just the way it is.

Today, people have progressed to the point of demanding a why answer. But who would blame them? What person in their right mind wants to do something, think something, or give their life to something, when they don’t understand why? So a generation is forming where unless you answer the why question, you get little participation, little time,  and little thought from them.

But as this WHY? Generation is increasing,  an unhealthy pattern is forming.

Observation:
People are quick to ask why, but no one is eager to put in the time to explore the answers for themselves. They are swift to ask “Why God“ or “Why the Church“ but are content with leaving it as a why question because as long as it remains a mystery, there’s no pressure to do something, think something, or give their life to something.

Yes, we’ve progressed to demanding a why answer, but deep down, the desire to know that answer doesn’t exist or drive us to find it on our own. I think the word “exploration“ needs to characterize this generation just as much as the word “why.“ Perhaps, we can learn to genuinely explore the why questions rather than use it for an excuse.

Love and Peace,

Pastor Josh
