Missions' News from around the World

Backpacks for Kids

King Street Church desires to be a community of people who work hard to make other people's lives better. We continue to look for meaningful ways to contribute and add value to peoples lives in the Durham Region. We’re faced with a real need in Oshawa, school-aged children who are under-resourced and don't have adequate school supplies. We believe learning and life go together and that every child should have an equal opportunity for a good education. Mary Street Community School is one of our local elementary schools (Grades JK-8) that is currently the only one servicing the downtown Oshawa community. The majority of these students are under-resourced and come from one-parent families or group homes. Many of these students live well below the poverty line. The majority of these students come to school inadequately fed and dressed. When families are struggling to provide the basic needs of food, shelter and clothing for their children; school supplies become a luxury that many of these students cannot afford them. We believe at King Street Church that we can make a difference in this school. No child should have to go without the necessary school supplies. We have partnered with Tracey Cant (Principal at Mary Street Community School) and Staples Business Depot in Whitby (Thickson / King Street) to help these students be adequately prepared to learn and grow in their formal education. We have purchased 100 backpacks with the necessary school supplies to go in each pack. We want these students to know that we care about them and that we want them to succeed. We are looking to our Church Family to consider purchasing one or multiple backpacks to help these students start the Fall 2009 School year well resourced. The cost per backpack with school supplies is $25. We hope you will partner with us as we work together to see children succeed in life!

Missions Philosophy

Our philosophy of missions here at King Street Church is based on the biblical model found in Acts 1:8. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
